Police beef up security in Iewduh, Motphran

Two more held, six released

SHILLONG: Following Friday’s incident, the State police have intensified security in and around Iewduh and Motphran to prevent any kind of untoward incident.

Informing this here on Saturday, Vivek Syiem, SP (City), said his department received reports that some unidentified people went to threaten some non-tribal shopkeepers in Iewduh.

“We will not allow any attempt to disrupt the law and order situation. We will not hesitate to take stringent action against those people who are involved in such act,” Syiem said adding that two more persons have been arrested in connection with Friday’s incident in which unruly mob attacked KHADC staff with lethal weapons.

The arrested persons are Amit Pal and Mohammed Iftiyaq, who were arrested from Barapathar, Jhalupara respectively.

Meanwhile, six people, who were arrested on Friday soon after incident, have been released after establishment of their innocence.

“At present, we have four people including the father and son duo of Paul Leong and Kimfa Marbaniang in our custody,” the SP (City) said.

“We are trying to locate and arrest all those who are involved in the attack,” he added.

UDP condemns : Meanwhile, the UDP has strongly condemned Friday’s attack on the KHADC staff and the journalist.

“We demand an immediate arrest of all those responsible for the attack,” UDP joint secretary Donkupar Sumer said in a statement issued here on Saturday.

Sumer, who is also the MDC and EM in charge of Mining and Geology, said that the party appreciated the stand taken by the present Executive Committee (EC) to check the non-tribal traders who are illegally operating their business without obtaining valid trading license.
