SHILLONG: The National Green Tribunal has taken up the issue of the alarming pollution level of Wahumkhrah and Umshyrpi rivers in the city and fixed a hearing on the matter on October 7 in Shillong.

An official source on Friday said that following a plea for the intervention of the Tribunal on the need to protect the two rivers from further pollution, the matter was admitted by the NGT during its hearing on Friday and a further hearing will be held in Shillong on October 7 when the Tribunal takes up other issues.

During the next hearing, the State Government and the State Pollution Control Board will have to submit their views and the steps taken to ensure pollution free water bodies.

It was based on the plea of Naba Bhattacharjee that the NGT had taken up the matter.
