Kohima: Odisha Governor and veteran Naga politician S.C. Jamir has expressed concern at the loss of traditional values among Nagas which, he said, has resulted in loss of courage and conviction in raising their voices against wrongs in the society.
Speaking as the chief celebrant at the Tsungremmong Festival organised by Diphupar Ao Lanur Telongjem (DALT), under the theme ‘Redefining Cultural Identity’, Dr Jamir blamed petty politics in recent years as a factor that has brought division in Naga society.
He asserted that politically, Naga society has not been free of internal conflict of interests and aspirations and the inability to uphold the common good has led to the crisis.
In this regard he mentioned the various issues such as- demand for a separate state by the Eastern Nagas, Alternative Political Arrangement in Manipur by Nagas living in that state, reiteration of exclusiveness by Central Nagas among others.
Dr Jamir called upon Nagas to rise above petty politics which is divisive and disruptive.
According to him the need was for strengthening the traditional social institutions as the key to Naga cultural revival, reformation and renaissance.
He called upon Nagas to strengthen the tribal Hoho or the Naga village council and to cultivate the Naga cultural ideal where ‘work is worship’ as the Naga priority.
The veteran Naga politician expounded the new Naga culture as a concept for dignity of labour, self-sufficiency through hard work, overcoming selfishness, promoting the spirit of oneness among the community, unity among all Nagas, standing up against wrongs, protecting Nagaland’s idyllic environment and prioritising agriculture and cottage industry.
Dr Jamir stressed that culture has to be seen as a growth engine that encompasses social, economic, educational and moral existence of Nagas.
He said culture has to evolve and change, for change is inevitable; yet change should not blind us to our values, morals and ethics which are so intimately associated with Naga culture.
He expressed the hope that good sense would prevail and Nagas would reject what was obsolete and embrace a new culture.
Dr Jamir called upon Nagas to move forward and embrace a culture that would create a unique cultural identity for Nagas and Nagaland.
Speaking as guest of honour, Minister PWD (R&B) and parliamentary affairs, Kuzholuzo Neinu said Nagas must come together and love one another and give up tribalism. (UNI)
