Infiltrators, Army officer killed in Kashmir

Srinagar: Five heavily armed infiltrators and an Army Lieutenant were killed and two soldiers injured in a fierce encounter going on near the Line of Control (LoC) in Gurez sector in Jammu and Kashmir.

Defence ministry spokesman Lt Colonel J S Brar told UNI that troops guarding the Line of Control (LoC) noticed a group of militants infiltrating into this side from Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) under the cover of darkness early this morning in Gurez sector, which is surrounded by Pakistan Army from three sides.

When challenged and asked to surrender near a particular place on this side of the LoC, militants opened fire which was returned by the troops, ensuing a gunbattle. He said so far five infiltrators were killed.

“We lost a Lieutenant, a resident of Gurdaspore, Punjab, who was commissioned in March this year,” he said, adding “two more soldiers were wounded.”

Lt Col Brar said this was the first major infiltration attempt during the holy month of Ramzan from across the border.

The infiltration attempts from across the border has increased during the past few months. (UNI)
