GH bank employees hold protest rally, seek release of colleague

TURA: Several hundred employees of the State Bank of India working in Garo Hills took part in a protest rally against the abduction of their colleague by suspected Garo militants and demanded his safe and unconditional release at the earliest.

The SBI employees took a rally out from the regional office in Chandmari and through the main thoroughfares of the town passing through the deputy commissioner’s and superintendent of police’s offices carrying placards and calling for a halt to attacks on the banking staff who are working under extreme conditions n the rural areas of the region.

“We demand safe and unconditional release of Subodh Kumar Mishra,” one of the banners read while another had the words “Stop playing with the lives of bank employees.”

Support and solidarity was also given by employees of other banks including the Tura Urban Co-operative Bank, Axis Bank and Meghalaya Rural Bank. Members of the Garo Baptist Convention, Missionary Sisters, and well wishers also took part in the rally.

The kidnappers, believed to be from the ASAK outfit, have reportedly demanded Rs 10 lakh from the family of Mishra.
