Landslide claims two sisters

SHILLONG: Two sisters of a family were killed and three others had a close shave in two separate incidents of landslide in the state in the last 24 hours.

Two girls from the same family — Sarana Thabah (13) and Sathi Thabah (6) — were buried alive at Madnung village near Sohiong, East Khasi Hills on Friday.

East Khasi Hills administration on Saturday paid an ex-gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh each against two deaths to the family of the deceased.

Meanwhile, three persons — Johar Uddin (45 yrs), Md. Sukur Ali (50 yrs) and Akbar Ali (35 yrs) — who were buried inside the debris following a landslide in Keating road were rescued . The personnel from Fire & Emergency Service and other Police personnel managed to rescue them after a six-hour-long rescue operaion. They were later shifted to Civil Hospital, Shillong. Similarly, some buildings in the Bishnupur SB/CID Complex were also affected due to landside.

In another incident, a landslide near Lad Bakli, Dangar (EKH) disrupted the free flow of traffic even as the footbridge connecting Tyrsad (EKH) and five villages (Laitsohphlang, Lyngdoh, Phanblang, Perkseh and Umsawma) was also washed away.

Meanwhile, the rising water of Wahumkhrah inundated Pynthorbah area. Several flood-affected people have taken shelter in Pynthorumkhrah Community Hall.
