TURA: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has said that the State government would make it mandatory for 50 per cent reservation of seats for girl students in all residential schools that are due to come up in the block development headquarters of the State.

The government plans to set up a residential school in each block to help raise the quality of education and give an opportunity for children from the area to experience hostel life as in other parts of the country.

“This year the pass percentage of students in SSLC (Class X) examinations was dismal. This is because proper guidance is not in place. More effort on the part of parents is a must if change is to be witnessed,” indicated the Chief Minister.

He said residential schools would give the much needed boost to the education sector and prevent children from going astray. But there was a catch with the promise of the residential dream. The government would require nothing short of 75 bighas of land to start each of the residential school in the various blocks.
