NGT ban: Rao panel reviews coal assessment progress

SHILLONG: The newly-formed MS Rao committee has directed the administrations of those districts, which are yet to complete assessment of extracted coal, to complete the process at the earliest.

Headed by MS Rao, Principal Secretary, Forest, Meghalaya government, the committee, constituted by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on June 9 to assess the extracted coal and regulate its transportation, held a review meeting here on Thursday.

The deputy commissioners of eight districts participated in the meeting.

Some of the districts such as South Garo Hills and West Khasi Hills are yet to finish the exercise, while some have already finished the job, sources said.

The meeting was attended by Additional Chief Secretary KS Kropha and other senior officers.
