Assam-Nagaland border clash

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Thursday reviewed the prevailing law and order situation in Golaghat district where three persons were killed in police firing following violence along the state border.

Gogoi, who is closely monitoring the situation ever since disturbances broke out along the inter-state boundary, directed Deputy Commissioner Julie Sonowal to ensure regular supply of relief materials to people living in relief camps and to rehabilitate the affected at the earliest.

Gogoi also asked the administration not to let its guard down and keep a close watch on the situation to thwart the evil machinations of some forces at work, an official spokesman said.

The Deputy Commissioner apprised the Chief Minister about the latest law and order situation which was gradually returning to normalcy though night curfew remained in force from 10 pm to 6 am. to prevent any untoward incident.

Meanwhile, 29 additional fixed security pickets have been set up in the B Sector of Assam-Nagaland boundary to provide security to people living there.

The pickets are being manned by four companies of CRPF and five companies of SSB personnel with three additional companies of Assam Police Battalions also stationed there.

Additional barracks for the security forces will be set up by the Golaghat Superintendent of Police with the help of Forest Department.

Altogether 5,099 inmates living in relief camps have returned home with 147 returning during the last 24 hours. Of the 14 relief camps opened by the district administration, three have been closed down.

Altogether 9,837 displaced persons of 16 villages were living in relief camps as on August 15 last. (PTI)
