Dorbar initiative to protect environment

SHILLONG: In a unique initiative, the Dorbar Shnong of Mawryngkneng has formulated its own laws to protect the environment within the boundaries of the village.
“The laws were duly adopted by the residents of the village during the meeting of the Dorbar in May this year,” Mawryngkneng Dorbar Shnong general secretary, Wanlambok Kharsati said in a statement issued here on Friday.
The Dorbar Shnong has decided to ban the use of chemicals in the village which it felt would destroy the aquatic life. According to Kharsati, the Dorbar Shnong also decided that a fine of Rs 50,000 would be imposed on anyone caught dumping chemicals in the water bodies.
“We have also decided to impose a penalty of Rs 10,000 on anyone responsible for destruction of the forest areas within the village,” he said.
The Mawryngkneng Dorbar Shnong general secretary also informed drilling of bore wells have been banned in the village.
“We have also decided to protect the various catchment areas in the village,” he added.
