SHILLONG: The Home Guard personnel, who have been offering a helping hand to the State police as traffic volunteers along the NH 44, have threatened to boycott their duties if the State Government fails to pay their pending dues.

A delegation of the Home Guard from Mawryngkneng and Sohryngkham villages of East Khasi Hills led by KSU’s Mawryngkneng Circle, met Home Minister HDR Lyngdoh on Tuesday to discuss the issue of releasing the pending dues.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, a member of the delegation said, “We will boycott our duties as traffic volunteer from September 1 till the government releases our pending dues for the last one year.”

It may be mentioned that around 12 Home Guard personnel from Mawryngkneng and 12 more from Sohryngkham have been assisting the State Police Department in manning the traffic along the Shillong-Jowai National Highway 44 for a long time.

According to sources, payment of their daily wage, which is Rs 140 per day, has been irregular.

The KSU, which led the delegation, has also demanded early release of pending dues of the Home Guard personnel.

If the Home Guard personnel boycott their duties it will adversely affect the vehicular movement on the National Highway 44 as thousands of vehicles ply in this busy road connecting Meghalaya with the rest of the country.
