SHILLONG: With an attempt to address the problem of high rate of school drop-out in the State, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has proposed to the Centre a housing scheme based on technology available locally.

“After an indepth study, we have found out that one of the main reasons for high school dropout and failure in examinations is poor housing facilities. To address this issue, I have proposed a new housing scheme during my meeting with Union Minister for Rural Development Nitin Gadkari on Monday,” Sangma said here on Tuesday.

He said that it is important to understand and appreciate that housing solutions must meet minimum requirements for healthy living while keeping in mind the tribal family and all its components.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister suggested a minimum 2BHK dwelling space under the programme so that a family is adequately accommodated even as informing that the Union Minister has sought for a detailed presentation on this new housing scheme.

According to him, he (Gadkari) has urged that this proposed programme should be linked to Green Technology using the available natural resources .

When queried about the cost component of such dwelling space, the CM said an amount of Rs 3 lakh has been estimated per unit even as he suggested to the Union minister that funding for such a project can always be effected in “a convergence mode”.
