SHILLONG: The Finance Department has initiated a departmental inquiry against the tainted former Mawryngkneng Block Development Officer (BDO) Langstar Kharkongor who was caught red-handed while accepting bribe in April last.

A senior official on Tuesday informed that Kharkongor was put under suspension immediately after his arrest.

“We cannot initiate any disciplinary action against the official unless we have documentary evidence to substantiate his offence. At present, the department only received a copy of the FIR filed against the tainted official,” the senior official said.

Replying to query, he said the Department had approached police for documentary evidence.

“The police also are not in a position to provide the necessary evidence since they have already submitted the same before the court,” the official said, adding, “We have been suggested by police to approach the court to get the copies of the documentary evidence”.

He informed that the department would soon approach the court in this connection.

Replying to a query, the official said the Department also received some documents from the Community and Rural Development (C&RD) department as Kharkongor was attached to the department when he committed the crime.

When contacted, Additional SP (Crime) Vivek Syiem said the investigation into this case was still on.

It may be mentioned that the BDO was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 45,000 as a ‘share’ of MNREGS funds.

A police team led by Additional SP (Crime) laid a trap on the basis of a complaint lodge by Chandra L Nongbri, a member of the Village Employment Council (VEC) of Smit .
