SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee of West and South West Khasi Hills District Coal Miners’ and Exporters’ Association has asked Chief Minister Mukul Sangma to impress upon the NGT the need to allow coal mining for a period of two years in order to meet all the financial liabilities.

In a statement submitted to the Chief Minister, the Association also gave an undertaking that impact of coal mining on environment will be looked into seriously. Besides, the Association also assured that necessary licenses from various Government departments would be obtained failing which mining activities may be stopped by the authorities without issuing any notices to the stakeholders.

The Association also said that it was not possible to pay advance royalty on the assessed coal since the quantity is huge and the amount to be paid would be too high.
