Experts suggest comprehensive study on water bodies in Tripura

Agartala: Experts suggested to carry out comprehensive study for conservation and management of Rudrasagar Lake, only lake palace in Northeast and other potential water bodies besides, strengthening a geo-information system based data and knowledge centre to facilitate mapping and policy planning of resource-potentials of Tripura.

A three day national seminar on water, energy and biodiversity of northeast organised by Institute of Engineers concluded here yesterday with 15 point recommendation where 18 renowned scientists and experts deliberated on the issues.

They suggested setting up of a biodiversity patenting cell for promotion of biodiversity products, socio-economic development, employment generation and systematic adaptation of capacity building program for the state.

The seminar observed that the projected climate change had adverse impact on the potentials of natural resources of northeast and a comprehensive and strategic policy planning through consultative dialogue between the Centre and the state governments of the region were essentially required for sustainable development.

They emphasised on initiating diplomatic dialogues with the neighbouring countries through coordinated data and information sharing approach, mutual scientific interaction and socio-cultural dimensionality.

Watershed conservation and treatment would be extensively promoted to reduce top soil erosion and transportation of inland sediments, the experts opined, adding district level water quality testing laboratories with advanced equipment need to be promoted and established. (UNI)
