Opposition wants Corporation to suspend spot billing system

SHILLONG: The Opposition UDP has voiced serious concern over the inflated bills of the MeECL which has badly hit the poor consumers.

UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh on Thursday expressed shock that some consumers in Nongthymmai and Madanriting have been supplied electricity bills amounting to more than Rs.4 lakh.

“This clearly indicates that the incompetence of the MeECL is at its most absurd level. This also shows why MeECL should have professionals running it,” Lyngdoh said, while also expressing concern over the power outages despite the water level being at its peak.

Echoing similar sentiments, party’s Nongthymmai legislator, Jemino Mawthoh, said MeECL was taking the consumers for a ride.

“I was shocked when I was told by some people of my constituency that they had received electricity bills of over Rs.4 lakh,” he said.

Mawthoh observed that MeECL will have to take a fresh look into the spot billing system.

“This problem of inflated bills must be due to the inability of the bill collector to handle the machines. I think that the MeECL should give proper orientation to their people on how to use these machines,” he said, adding that the Corporation should put on hold the spot billing system until the various issues were resolved.

Meanwhile, the UDP working president informed that the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of public representatives and Rangbah Shnong of various localities of Shillong and its adjoining areas are likely to meet next week to review their meeting with Power Minister Clement R. Marak.
