SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills District Administration has finally imposed a total restriction on movement on the dilapidated Motphran overbridge.

On Thursday night, magistrates along with police personnel went to the overbridge and closed it with barricades to restrict any movement.

Earlier, the District Administration had imposed Section 144 CrPC prohibiting any activity on the overbridge which has been declared unsafe.

Hawkers operating stalls selling second-hand clothes on the overbridge have been shifted to the ground floor of the Parking Lot opposite Synod Market at Motphran.

Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh later informed that the Department and the hawkers have reached an understanding on the matter.

Earlier, the department had allocated space at the Urban Parking Lot at Khlieh Iewduh and the hawkers, who first agreed to relocate, later took a U-turn and refused to relocate claiming that the area was unsafe for women vendors.
