Mawkhar pip Umphrup 3-2 in 2nd Div soccer

SHILLONG: Umphrup fell behind Mawkhar 2-3 in a Second Division football match at Polo Grounds on Saturday after staging a comeback from a two goal deficit.

Mawkhar took the lead 34th minute when A. Lyngdoh cleared a shot past the keeper. A. Lamin doubled the score only three minutes later. However, B. Kharumnuid made it 1-2 in the 39th and soon after, D. Nongbri added another to equalise for Umphrup.

But a 55th minute strike by A. Khongwir sealed the fate of the match 3-2 in favour of Mawkhar.

In a Third Division game, Mylliem thrashed Lapalang 4-0. Lapalang’s R. Basaiawmoit scored an own goal on 3rd minute of the match. Mylliem were ruthless in their approach and pumped in three more goals, with two coming from S. Makri 52 (P) and 69. B. Swer scored the other in the 58th minute.

Meanwhile, Umlyngka scraped past a resilient Mawtawar to snatch a 2-1 win. R. Swer made an early 3rd minute conversion to put Umlyngka in front but the lead was broken after S. Wankhar levelled for his side (20″). Just when Mawtawar appeared to have a chance of winning, Mawtawar struck back through M. Kharbuki’s 56th minute goal to win the match.

The other Third Division match saw Lumdiengjri score one past Mawkriah West. Riban scored in the 41st minute.

Shillong Premiere League: Malki vs. MLP at 3:30 pm, JN Sports Complex

Second Division: ARC Shillong vs. Umpling at 4 pm

Third Division: Sawmer vs. Rynjah at 1:30 pm & Marbisu vs. Umphyrnai at 4pm

 

Soccer tourney begins

SHILLONG: Lum Pyngngad locality of Shillong on Saturday organized the customary annual football tournament for men and women. The inaugural match of women’s category between Block-4 defeated Block-1 by 4 goals to 1.

In the men’s category Group “B” Tyllilang defeated Rangkynsai (1-0).

The tournament was inaugurated by Executive Member of Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council Latiplang Kharkongor.

 

Football academy in city

SHILLONG: In an attempt to promote football among the youths in the locality, Nongthymmai Sports and Cultural Club (NS&CC) has decided to set up a football academy at Jingkieng Nongthymmai. The football academy will be open to all youths both boys and girls between the age of 10 to 15 years. “The main objective of the club to set up this academy is to train up the young talents. The academy will also select players who will play for the club in the coming years especially in the football league of the Shillong Sports Association (SSA),” NS&CC football secretary T Shullai said in a statement issued here on Saturday. He said that any interested youth who are keen to join the academy are to submit the application forms at the office of the club before September 18.
