Kamakhya shrine security geared up after Al-Qaeda threat

Guwahati: Security has been beefed up in and around the ancient Kamakhya Temple, the famous “Shakti Peeth” in Guwahati in view of Islamic terror group Al Qaeda threatening to spread its tentacles to Assam along with some other parts of South East Asia.
Assam chief minister, Tarun Gogoi who also holds the home portfolio, reviewed the security arrangement in and around Kamakhya Temple which is visited by hundreds of pilgrims every day, a couple of days back in a meeting with senior officials of the police department and the civil administration in the state.
Gogoi instructed to augment the security arrangement in the temple located atop Nilachal Hills overlooking the Brahmaputra River to its north.
Accordingly, Assam Police in coordination with Kamakhya Temple management committee have geared up security measures.
So  far, 30 additional close circuit cameras have been installed in and around the temple premises in addition to 25 such cameras that had already been installed in the area.
Door frame metal detectors have been installed in all the four main entrances to the temple while arrangements have been made for night patrolling by a seven-member patrol party of city police.
Police informed that Kamakhay Temple management committee has also engaged 30 private security guards in the temple premises to monitor the movement of visitors to the temple.
These private security guards will be working in coordination with Assam police guards.
