SHILLONG: The State Government is planning to release the twenty per cent of the arrear for the college teachers soon.

Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has said that the State Government would release the 20 per cent of the arrears for the college teachers as it is the State Government’s share. The remaining 80 per cent of the arrears is borne by the UGC.

An official of the Education department, while speaking on the issue, said the government needs around Rs 70 crore to pay the arrears to the college teachers. “We presently have fund constraints but we are committed to release the arrears at the earliest,” the official said here on the request of anonymity.

It may be mentioned that college teachers observed a black flag day last week in support of their demands for the implementation of the revised pay scale and payment of arrears.

Meanwhile, in what may come as relief for the non-teaching employees of the State, the Chief Minister has announced that the Government is working out details to implement their arrears on or before Teachers’ Day.

The non-teaching staff of the deficit colleges under the banner of the Meghalaya Non Teaching Employees’ Association (MNTEA) organised a rally at Students’ Field, Jaiaw here on Wednesday to pressurize the State Government to meet their demands.
