NONGSTOIN: Road connectivity in West Khasi Hills District was severely affected by the torrential rainfall that led to landslides in several areas.
Roads connecting Nongstoin to Shillong and Riangdo besides the Riangdo-Athiabari and Rwiang-Langpih routes were among the worst affected.
Though there was no report of loss of life, commuters have been on the receiving end for most part of the journey along the routes.
Landslides at Umjei village which falls on the Nongstoin-Shillong road and Wahblei between Nongstoin to Riangdo caused traffic congestion along the national highway.
Long stretches of hills have been dug and cut to pave way for expansion of the Shillong-Tura road and the loose soil, assisted by heavy rainfall, slid down to the road carrying small trees and boulders with them causing obstacles all along.
Vehicles drove cautiously through the landslide prone areas where despite obstacles traffic movement was somehow maintained by the district administration.
Some commuters felt that the company implementing the Shillong-Tura road project must take immediate measures to prevent landslides to avoid any major catastrophe in the future.
Meanwhile, the FKJGP Mawshynrut Circle on Tuesday demanded the State Government to provide immediate relief to the victims of landslides.
The Federation also sought compensation for those who have lost their near and dear ones in the natural disaster in Thaiem village under Mawshynrut C&RD Block.
