CM reviews post-landslide situation

SHILLONG: Following Sunday’s massive landslide on the NH 40, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on Wednesday reviewed the situation with the officials of PWD, NHAI and others.

The landslide that occurred at Umling, about 43 kms from Guwahati on National Highway 40 that connects the Assam capital with Shillong, had brought traffic to a standstill, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides for several kilometres.

The Deputy Commissioner Ri-Bhoi District was also present in the meeting.

The Chief Minister directed the Chief General Manager of NHAI to take steps to prevent recurrence such landslide, which claimed one life.

He said that expert should be consulted in this regard and additional land should be acquired as per requirement for slope stabilisation to avoid frequent landslides.

He also directed NHAI to make provisions for pedestrian crossing at thickly populated inhabited areas in view of the 4-laning of the NH-40.

The Chief Minister said that he would take up the matter with Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. He also emphasized on the early completion of the project.

Meanwhile, the situation along the national highway continues to be grim as the repairing work for the landslide was still going on.

Hundreds of vehicles were stopped at Umling on Tuesday and Wednesday since the restoration work was going on.
