Rs 3 cr sought for furnishing works

SHILLONG: There is no end to the spending of money on the new Meghalaya House at Russell Street, Kolkata.

The building, which though was handed over to the Meghalaya Government in August 2013, is yet to be inaugurated pending furnishing works.

The State Government now will have to spend an additional amount of Rs 3 crore for the furnishing work of the house.

The proposal has been sent to Government but the fund is yet to be sanctioned, an official said.

Earlier, the State Government had to pay abnormally high amount of over Rs 20 lakh as license fee to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to clear the construction plan of sewerage system of the building to connect to the main sewerage system of Kolkata city.

The original estimate of Rs 22 crore for the construction of entire Meghalaya House at Kolkata shot upto 49. 2 crore. Now with the additional furnishing works, the expenditure will be over Rs 52 crore.

Much publicity was given on August 5 last year when the key of the Meghalaya House was handed over to GAD Minister HDR Lyngdoh at a” handing and taking over ceremony’ held at Kolkata as the State Public Works Department (PWD) formally took over the Meghalaya House from the construction agency, M/s Asian Housing and Infrastructure Pvt. Limited.
