Militants kill Assam-based businessman in East Garo Hills

SHILLONG: After a brief lull, violence returned to haunt Garo Hills with militants attacking and killing a businessman and injuring two others in East Garo Hills District on Friday.

As per police reports, militants belonging to Achik Matgrik Elite Force (AMEF), a breakaway group of ASAK, attacked a vehicle carrying Assam-based businessmen at Abrong Hill Road in Wageasi in East Garo Hills on Friday leading to the death of one businessman identified as Atawar Ali.

Police informed that the incident occurred at around noon, when four businessmen from Krishnai, Assam, were proceeding towards Williamnagar in a Maruti Alto (AS 18B 8202) and on reaching Abrong Hill Road, about 4 km from Wageasi, some AMEF militants fired indiscriminately at their vehicle and it fell into a gorge.

While Atawar Ali died on the spot after sustaining bullet injuries, another trader identified as Rejabul Islam sustained grievous injuries and was shifted to Goalpara. A third businessman identified as Haider Ali sustained minor injuries. The fourth businessmen identified as Sayedur Rahman was lucky to escape unhurt.

Police said the militants wanted to kidnap these traders for ransom but when they resisted the ultras fired at them.

Two ASAK cadres surrender

Two ASAK cadres on Friday surrendered before the police in Baghmara.

Police informed that the two cadres Rahul M Sangma (22) of Emangre and Pisal M Sangma (19) of Rongdotchi, had joined the outfit in February and May this year.

The cadres surrendered two country made pistols, six rounds each, two jungle knives and three detonators.

Police said that the surrender was facilitated by friends from the Church group in Baghmara.
