SHILLONG: Shillong girl Naomi Datta has won the first prize at the prestigious Elle Fiction Awards 2014 that carries a purse of Rs.50,000 for her short story “TWO FAT AUNTS”.

The story is based on the weekly Tombola (Housie) played at the elitist Shillong Club here in the city. Satirical, the story is eminently readable and appears in the September 2014 issue of the magazine.

“Full of wit and humour, her writing is reminiscent of that of the famous P.G. Wodehouse,” one of the judges commented. “Story has a wonderful, improvised quality which feels very much like early Chekhov…,” another judge said.

Naomi, the daughter of Col. Anjan Datta and Rukmini Datta, Principal of Tender Care School, had her education in Step By Step School, Pine Mount School and St. Mary’s College. She is also an alumnus of Mumbai’s Sophia College.
