SHILLONG: The villagers at Pyndeng Nongbri, Mairang, West Khasi Hills are concerned over the loss of their land due to road construction works being carried out for PWD by a company at NH 44E.

The work at NH 44E is being carried out by BSC & C&C JV.

A resident of Pyndeng Nongbri, Lazarus Marwein alleged that the Government had taken a portion of the land after paying due compensation but now the company has started to bulldoze even into portions which were not been paid for.

A visiting team of the CSWO said that a natural pond from which the villagers used to draw water has also been destroyed by the company workers who dumped soil on it and dug wherever they wanted.

“When they had gone to collect the money for the land compensation, the officer had assured that they will not destroy the natural pond from which they were getting water, but destruction brought about by the company is clearly visible,” the CSWO said.

The rampant dumping is also being ) reported as the bulldozers have been used to haphazardly dig and throw the soil and big boulders down.

Meanwhile, company workers said that nothing could have been done without the instructions and identifications by PWD officials.
