SHILLONG: City police on Saturday night picked up five persons while they were attempting to desecrate a graveyard at Lawmali.

The five persons have been identified as Rapme Dkhar (22) from Nongrim Hills, Brandon Jyrwa (21) from Jaiaw Laitdom, Raphel Wanniang (19) from Upper Mawprem and Kyrshanlang Ryntathiang and Ferdinand Massar (35), both from Mawlai.

Police suspected that the five persons might have been involved in earlier cases of desecration of graves.

It was informed that the arrested persons had tried to mislead the police by providing wrong names.

“Police on Sunday managed to ascertain their real identities and have registered a case against them for giving false information to the police,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M. Kharkrang informed.

“This is a good breakthrough for the police considering that there was no clue of the accused who had committed similar offences in the past,” he said, adding that the arrested persons have been remanded in 14-day judicial custody.
