SHILLONG: A Committee headed by Deputy Chief Minister Rowell Lyngdoh which was entrusted with the task of studying and examining a few amendments to the Benami Transaction Act, 1980, and the Tenants Verification Draft Bill, held a meeting on Friday in the absence of pressure groups who chose to skip the meeting.

Lyngdoh informed that the pressure groups had also skipped an earlier meeting of the Committee.

“I had discussed the matter of non participation of the pressure groups with the Chief Minister and he told me to go ahead with the meetings,” Lyngdoh added.

The Chief Minister had instructed the Committee to complete the task allotted to them without the participation of the pressure groups and submit the report to the Government.

The pro-ILP pressure groups had made it clear that they would not be part of the three committees constituted by the State Government to find out ways and means to address the problem of influx.

The pressure groups also accused Lyngdoh of holding them responsible for the delay in submission of the report despite the expiry of the two-month timeline given to the Committee.

Besides the Rowell-led Committee, the other two committees are headed by Additional DGP S.K. Jain and Chief Secretary Barkos Warjri, respectively.

The Jain Committee has already submitted its report to the Government on the entry and exit points in State except Garo Hills where the process was delayed due to the devastating floods in the region last month.

The Committee headed by the Chief Secretary was tasked to study and examine various legislative measures to achieve the objective of coming up with a comprehensive mechanism to check influx.
