Stress laid on formation of disaster management committees in Garo Hills

RESUBELPARA: The Deputy Commissioner in charge North Garo Hills, D.D. Sangma, has stressed on the need for forming village-level disaster management committees in flood affected villages of Garo Hills at the earliest.

He state that during the devastating flood in Garo Hills on September 22, the casualties and the loss of lives was minimized due to the keen steps and measures taken by the NGOs and volunteers.

He stated that villages near the Damring Valley, Didram Valley, Manda Valley and Ildek Valley fall under very low levels, which need to have special alert systems.

At the same time, most of the citizens are not aware about voluntary services, as some of the people misunderstood it as working for wages only, he said.

Moreover, National Disaster Management Force cadres were also harassed by some local youths, he informed. Recently, residents of Darenchi area convened a public meeting and formed a village-level disaster management committee with representatives from seven villages.

The meeting selected Lawrence Marak as president, Nikseng Marak as secretary and eleven members along with seven Sordars and one Nokma. The newly-formed body will report to the district headquarter to collect rescue boats from the North Garo Hills DC’s Office.
