Miners’ forum decries crimes in coal belts

SHILLONG: The State Coordination Committee of Coal Owners’, Miners’ and Dealers’ Forum has condemned the incident where an alleged attempt was made to murder one of its members Smingpool Nongbri at Nongjri near Borsora.

The Forum said that such law and order incidents have become frequent in coal belt areas of the State after the ban on coal mining by the NGT coupled with the handicap of lack of infrastructure.

In this regard, a joint delegation of the Forum and the Meghalaya Mine Owners’ and Exporters’ Association met the Commissioner of Home department and apprised him of the present situation in Meghalaya.

The Forum also welcomed the order of the NGT to replace K.S. Kropha from the committee constituted by the Tribunal.

The Forum also asked the committee to expedite all the direction of the NGT for transportation of the extracted coal.

 

CORP members attacked in Ri Bhoi

NONGPOH: One Samlang Pdahkasiej, general secretary of Confederation of Ri Bhoi People (CORP) Eastern Zone and his friend were allegedly assaulted by unknown illegal coal transporters at around 10.30pm at Lad Umsaw, Ri Bhoi District on Tuesday.

The incident occurred when Samlang and his friend tried to prevent some coal and charcoal laden trucks from plying through the PWD Road of Mawlyndep, Mairung, UCC and Umbir to prevent damage to the road.

However, unidentified persons suddenly attacked Pdahkasiej and his friend with bamboos and sticks, who were later shifted to hospital with serious injuries.

CORP Central Body, though its president Doris Sulein, filed an FIR on Wednesday against one Bishar Dhar of Bhoirymbong, who, they claimed was involved in the attack.

 

Two suicides, one failed bid in Shillong

SHILLONG: Two cases of suicide and one case of attempted suicide were reported in Shillong on Tuesday.

One seventeen-year-old committed suicide by hanging in the residence of one Briston Kharsyiemlieh at Nongrimmaw, Laitumkhrah. Necessary formalities were observed and matter is under enquiry.

In another such case, on Tuesday around 3 pm, one unidentified male person, approximately 45 years of age, committed suicide by hanging from a tree at Umpling Dongshaneng, Shillong.

In the third incident, one Poonam Devi (35) set herself on fire in her residence at Madanrting Block-C, Shillong. She was shifted to NEIGRIHMS and matter is under enquiry.

 

Special council deferred

 

SHILLONG: A special council of the Federation of Khasi States chiefs scheduled on November 28 has now been deferred to December 2.

A statement in this regard said that on being informed by Dolloi Elaka Raliang about the ‘Shad Niam Kopati’ of Elaka Raliang, to be conducted on November 28 and 29, the Grand Council of Chiefs & the Federation of Khasi States and their Chiefs have shifted the Special Dorbar from November 28 to December 2, 2014 at 11am, at Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong.

Criminal conspiracy

SHILLONG: A shocking case of criminal conspiracy has been reported in Tura, West Garo Hills.

Police said that one Anjuwara Begum lodged a complaint at Tura Women PS that on September 19, one Md. Abul Hussain of Tura invited her and her two teenage daughters to his house at Tura.

Next day, he took them to Phulbari on the pretext of providing her with a job at Guwahati and handed them over to one Md. Rahul Sheikh and Md. Nozrul Islam, who took them to Guwahati and after making her and her elder daughter unconscious, they took away her younger daughter and handed her over to her father Md. Samsher Ali.

Later, the two accused took the complainant and her elder daughter (15) to the house of one Pereng Bihari in New Delhi and sold her daughter to a third party, while she was sent back to Guwahati.

On reaching Guwahati, when she contacted Nozrul Islam to enquire about her elder daughters’ whereabouts, she was threatened with dire consequences.
