SHILLONG: The UDP has suffered a setback with the resignation of its joint secretary in charge Garo Hills, Rocky R Marak.

“I have taken the decision since the UDP has failed to raise several important issues affecting the State as a major Opposition party in the Assembly,” Marak told newsmen after submitting his resignation letter to the party president Donkupar Roy here on Wednesday.

The former UDP joint secretary said that party has not raised many pertinent issues affecting the people in Garo Hills like insecurity, kidnapping, insurgency affecting overall development, continuing NGT ban that led to increase in criminal activities in the region.

He said that the popularity of the UDP was slowly declining especially in Garo Hills mainly due to the wrong decisions. “The performance of the party in the last Assembly election is a testimony that the party has lost the confidence of the people. The UDP is no longer a force in the State,” Marak said.

The decision of the UDP not to field candidate in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections has demoralised the party members, Marak said, adding the party instead supported NPP which has a different ideology altogether.
