Deborah, Tennydard to appear before court today

SHILLONG: Security has been tightened in Williamanagar ahead of Friday’s court hearing on the alleged link between Social Welfare Minister Deborah Ch Marak with proscribed GNLA.

According to sources, IG, Western Range F D Sangma is camping in the area to oversee the security arrangements.

“Elaborate security arrangements have been made to prevent any untoward incident during tomorrow’s court hearing following last night’s incident in which suspected GNLA militants attempted to kill one person suspected to be a witness in the case,” sources said.

On Thursday, a group of five suspected heavily armed GNLA militants led by its self-styled area commander Jimmy allegedly attacked a man whom they suspected to be a witness in the case related to the Social Welfare Minister at Jongkigre village.

Deborah Marak had already said that she would appear before the court along with her lawyer on Friday.

On November 3, Meghalaya police had filed a charge sheet against Deborah and former Williamnagar Block Youth Congress president Tennydard Marak in the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate F S Sangma for hatching a criminal conspiracy with GNLA in order to win the assembly elections.

Meanwhile, another accused Tennydard Marak will also appear before the court on Friday.

While denying his involvement in the case, he questioned the Election Commission on the matter saying “this is an election issue and why the Commission did not take up the matter seriously?”

Stating that the police should have followed up the matter with the Election Commission, he said that if there were reports of issuing threat pamphlets , where were the camera persons of Election Commission?

“It is a fabricated case,” he said
