SHILLONG: Khyndai Lad will soon a get a facelift as the beautification work of the area will start in the first week of September.

Informing this here on Tuesday, Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh told The Shillong Times that the beautification work would be completed by March, 2012.

The State Government earlier this month had decided to beautify Khyndai Lad and its adjoining areas besides widening the roads in certain stretches of the city with an estimated cost of Rs 16 crore.

“In the first phase, the administration will beautify the first 57 metres from the Khyndai lad junction till the end of MUDA shopping complex and then the beautification work would further proceed to the entire stretch till Umsohsun road and Sadar Police station junction on Thana Road,” Ms Lyngdoh said. “We will put cobbled footpaths and interlocking tiles in the entire stretch,” the Minister said adding that the idea behind the project was to make walking attractive as no vehicles would be allowed to enter the stretch once the beautification work was completed. The State Government would use expensive materials to give a new look to Khyndai Lad and its adjoining areas and there would also be proper drainage system in the area, she said adding, “we have discussed the matter with the stakeholders involved in the project and they have assured full cooperation.”

In the past the entire stretch was occupied by the hawkers. “Once the beautification is done, no hawker will be allowed to run business there,” Ms Lyngdoh said adding “the present advertisement hoardings will be replaced by the digitalized advertisements on the base of the buildings”.
