SHILLONG: After Meghalaya Agrovet Private Limited, a poultry farm company, failed to respond to a 15-day deadline served by the KHADC, the latter is contemplating to close down the firm.

“We will take a final call on whether to close down the firm after studying the inquiry report,” KHADC Executive Member in charge, Trade Latiplang Kharkongor told newsmen here on Wednesday.

Earlier in September, the KHADC had given a deadline of 15 days to the poultry farm directing it to take necessary measures to prevent the solid and liquid waste from polluting the River Umtrew.

Meanwhile, delegation of the Umsning Area Rivers Protection Forum (UARPF) comprising of KSU members and headmen of over 14 affected villages on Wednesday met KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum demanding the district council to immediately cancel the trading license of the poultry farm company.

Chairman of the forum, Peter Kylla said that the improper discharge of waste by the company is causing immense hardships to th people of the area who solely depend on the Umtrew for their water supply.

Headman of Nongjri Ummawbuh, N Nongsiej said that the pollution of the river has also affected the health centre and schools in the 14 villages. The headman, meanwhile, claimed that the company is yet to get clearance from the Meghalaya Pollution Control Board and Forest department.

The headman, however, expressed surprise over the alleged inaction of the Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner on the matter.
