‘Villager robbed off Rs 3000 by police’

SHILLONG: In one of the most bizarre and shocking allegations made against the police, joint publicity secretary of the GNLA, Garo Mandei Ch Marak, has accused the police of making a forced entry into a villager’s home and robbing him and his family of over Rs.3000 in cash.

According to the strange statement issued by the militant leader some men in police uniform barged into Sanjay M Sangma’s home at Rongrong in North Garo Hills on the pretext that they suspected him to be a GNLA and took away Rs.3000 from his possession. The villager claimed that even his wife and little child were also not spared, the GNLA said.

“The police did not spare a little amount of Rs.200 from my child and Rs.60 from my wife. It is a disgrace on the part of the police who should be providing security to the citizens to take away people’s property. This barbaric act of police in the name of the law is condemnable,” Garo Mandei said, while quoting the villager.

It is interesting to note that the militant leader’s wild claim comes a few days after Independent Rajabala MLA Ashahel D Shira’s home was similarly intruded upon by men in uniform claiming to be the police on Saturday night last week. According to Shira, a police team paid a visit to his home in two locations of Tura town in the dead of night claiming that they had reports about the movement of unknown people in the vicinity of his home.

Immediately after the arrival of the police team, the Rajabala MLA reportedly called up the officer in charge of the Tura PS to complaint about the late night intrusion but was informed that no order was given for a visit to the elected representative’s home.
