New Delhi: Rajya Sabha member from Meghalaya Wansuk Syiem on Thursday raised the issue of recent devastation in Garo Hills caused by unprecedented flood in the House and urged the Centre to grant initial assistance of Rs.3,072 crore as demanded by the state government.

Raising the matter during Zero Hour, Syiem said that the State Government with its limited resources was trying its best to mitigate the plight of the affected people.

Incidentally, a Central team had visited the flood-affected areas of Garo Hills and were apprised of the devastation due to flash floods. Terming the recent flood in Garo Hills as ‘unprecedented and unexpected’, Syiem said that the magnitude of the damage was very alarming.

Syiem said that the scale of challenges faced by the State has been colossal and that it has become a tough ask for the government to attend to all the affected families without the Centre’s help.
