Centre releases funds for 240 buses for State

New Delhi: The Centre has released funds for as many as 240 buses to ease the mounting pressure on public transportation in Meghalaya, mainly in its capital, Shillong.
This was intimated to State Urban Affairs Minister Ampreen Lyngdoh by the Union Ministry of Urban Development during the Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference and Expo held here recently.
The buses were sanctioned by the Centre under JNNURM following persistent demand from the Meghalaya Government.
Ampareen spoke on various initiatives taken by the Government of Meghalaya to provide hassle-free public transportation in Shillong. She also talked about the success stories of Shillong Public Transportation System and Supplementary Public Transportation System which are being operated on self sustainable basis.
She informed that the Supplementary Public Transportation System is one of its kinds in the country. She also spoke on the State Government’s initiative of New Shillong Township which is a ‘Smart City’ designed to decongest Shillong.
The meeting on Urban Mobility in Smart Cities was chaired by Babul Supriyo, Union Minister of State for Urban Development.
