PM assures induction of NE youths in Delhi police
Imphal:Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday appealed to the youths to strive to be free from the scourge of drugs.
“Use of drugs destroys individuals, then a family, later a society and finally the whole nation,” the Prime Minister said, while spea-king as the Chief Guest of the closing function of the Manipur Sangai Festival at Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre.
Mr Modi added that it is hard to give up drugs but “once we are free from it we shall be free from all problems. We all should stop destroying of our youths by drugs.” He further announced that more youths will be recruited in the Delhi Police. It will also help in making people aware of north eastern people, he observed.
Issues related to north east were also discussed with Chief Ministers of the region in the national capital, he said. His govern-ment was planning to solve the problems faced by the region, he further added.
Mr Modi appealed to all north eastern states to depute 200 women to be utilised as women police in Gujarat for two years. ‘It will help in integrating the nation and providing employment,’ he added.
Sports is in the DNA of the people of Manipur that is why his government decided to establish a Sports University in Mani-pur, he said.”Many people think sports University means production of sports persons only. It is not so, over 1000 jobs are associated with it. It will help develop a field of Science and many people will become sports architect, coaches, umpires, dieticians,” he added
People of the region have a good command over English hence he will be thinking of means to attract IT companies in Manipur and other north eastern states, he announced.
He further assured to look into the demands made by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh for the development of the state.
The prime minister, who arrived here around 1450 hrs, proceeded towards the venue of the Sangai Festival one of the biggest tourism events in the state.
After attending the function, he proceeded towards the BJP office at Nityaypat Chuthek for a brief meeting with party leaders.
The visit was marked with a general strike imposed by Co-ordination Committee (CorCom), a conglomerate of six different militant groups to oppose the visit of the prime minister. As a result streets were deserted and life came to a grinding halt.
Special security arrangements were taken up for the visit. The entire length from the airport to the Sangai Festival venue was guarded by police personnel. A blast was reported at Moirang, Bish-enpur district. However, no one was injured. No other untoward incident during the visit was reported.
CorCom said it imposed the strike as the India government has been ‘repressing’ the people of the region. It said the government has failed to lift the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, 1958.(UNI)
