SHILLONG: The National Khasi Union (NKU) has raised questions over the pricing of the High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) in the State.

“The high price of the HSRP is unjustified since it has not been able to address the issue of car thefts in the State,” NKU general secretary S Diengdoh said during a press conference here on Thursday.

He informed that the rate of HSRP for four wheelers costs up to Rs 1905 in Meghalaya whereas in Assam the price is only Rs.319.

Diengdoh also demanded clarification from the company – Shimnit Utsch India Private Limited – on the exorbitant rate of HSRP in Meghalaya.

“If the company fails to clarify on the issue of the high price we will then be compelled to ask the State Government to allot the contract to other companies who can provide HSRP at cheaper rates,” Diengdoh said.

Meanwhile, the NKU also questioned the credibility of the HSRP, and said that despite pay such a huge amount of money people were still facing the menace of car thefts.

“The credibility of the HSRP is under question in view of the increasing cases of vehicle thefts in the State,” he said.
