Endangered children

It has happened again, yet another scandalizing school rape in Bangalore. It passes understanding how a three year old girl could be raped by an attendant in the school premises. What kind of mindset leads to such an enormity? Bangalore schools have witnessed a spate of sexual assault in recent months. The law and order situation is appalling. While schools should shelter children in total safety, some of them have become the stamping ground of sexual depravity. There are not many schools in the city and parents are in a tizzy about which to choose. Children cannot be taught at home. There is no point in closing the schools where such crime occurs. The demand-supply gap goes against it. Parents are sometimes forced to send their children to schools with a bad record. Will it be better to slap heavy fines on these schools? CC TV cameras can help and details of school staff may be made available online. The school authorities should be in constant touch with the local police. If a school disregards the norms, it can be heavily penalized.

Next comes quick prosecution for cases of sexual abuse in schools. Political leaders should ensure the security of children. Obviously, they were slack in Bangalore. Karnataka Home Minister K.G. George in fact accused the media of unnecessarily hyping school rape incidents. Such an attitude is unforgiveable. The authorities must get to the bottom of the social and psychological malaise. Bangalore is not the only city prone to such horrendous occurrences.
