Woman attacked with acid in Srinagar, critical
SRINAGAR: A young woman, who is a law student, was attacked with acid here on Thursday, leaving her in a critical condition, police said. Police said the 21-year-old woman was attacked by unidentified assailants in Nowshehra locality of Srinagar city on Thursday afternoon. “The woman has been shifted to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) Soura where doctors have described her condition as critical,” a senior police officer said here. Police said the victim is a student of a law college in the city. “A manhunt has been started to nab the culprits…,” the officer said.(IANS)
2 youths get 5 yr-jail for trying to kill sister’s mom-in-law
New Delhi:Two brothers, who attempted to kill their sister’s mother-in-law, have been sentenced to five years in jail by a Delhi court. Additional Sessions Judge Sanjay Sharma handed down the rigorous imprisonment to Delhi residents Gul Mohamad (28) and Ali Mohamad (26) for firing at 45-year-old Samina, mother-in-law of their sister. “Keeping in view the fact that both the convicts are quite young and that they have their families and have no criminal antecedents, Gul Mohd and Ali Mohd are sentenced to five years rigorous imprisonment,” the judge said. While sentencing the convicts, the court said it has to consider the societal interest and the impact of the crime on the society. “Both the convicts are quite young and have family responsibilities. Sentencing is a delicate exercise. The court is conscious of the fact that sentencing a person to punishment may have adverse impact on him,” it said. (PTI)
Man gets life term for burning alive wife
Bundi (Raj):A court here has sentenced a 25-year-old man to life imprisonment for burning alive his wife. District and Sessions Judge Ramesh Chandra Meena convicted Shankar Bheel (25), a mine labourer in Dhaneshawar area, of setting afire is wife Sugnabai (20) who later succumbed to burn injuries, Public Prosecutor Bhupendra Sahay Saxena said. A penalty of Rs 2000 was also imposed on him. The accused was booked under sections 302 (punishment for murder), 322 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 342 (punishment for wrongful confinement) of the IPC in October 2012. Bheel, an alcoholic, set his wife ablaze in his house by pouring kerosene over her and ran away on October 15, 2012, Saxena said. Sugnabai was admitted by villagers to Maharao Bheem Singh (MBS) hospital, Kota where she succumbed to burn injuries three days later, he said.(PTI)
Three woman naxals surrender in Chhattisgarh
Raipur:Three women Maoists, one of them carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on her head, surrendered in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, police said on Thursday. The cadres turned themselves in before police last evening citing disappointment with the movement “on account of exploitation of lower rank rebels and women by senior Naxal leaders”, Bijapur Additional Superintendent of Police Indira Kalyan Elesela told PTI. Of the surrendered, Maini Majji alias Kavita (24) was the most dreaded one and associated with the outlawed CPI (Maoist) since 2004. She worked as member of Maoist’s Bhairamgarh platoon-13 and also as a “section commander” of platoon-12 in Gangloor region, the ASP said. Kavita carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh on her head. Besides, Seema Modiyam (30) and Sunita Telam (22) worked as a member of Local Operation Squad (LOS), Keshkal and Bhairamgarh Local Guerrilla Squad (LGS) respectively, he added. (PTI)
Man kills wife over family dispute
Thane:A 26-year-old village housewife was brutally killed by her husband in Kalyan taluka here after he suspected her of having an illicit affair, police said on Thursday. API SC Nagre of Kalyan taluka police station told PTI that the murder took place on Wednesday night after the young couple, who were living separately for the last six months, entered into an altercation. Last night, accused Nitin J Owhal reached victim Jyotsana’s house in village Galegaon and allegedly attacked her with sharp weapons after a quarrel leaving her dead on the spot, police said. Owhal fled the spot immediately after the incident. Police has launched a manhunt for him. Also, offence under sections 302 of the IPC had been registered against the accused and the body has been sent for postmortem. (PTI)
Block Education Officer held receiving Rs 15,000 bribe
Raipur:A Block Education Officer in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar district has been arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000 from the Superintendent of a government-run residential school, ACB officials said on Thursday. The 50-year-old Mohan Lal Joshi, posted in Darbha block, was caught red-handed yesterday accepting the bribe money for issuing monthly scholarship meant for students, an ACB official said. According to complainant Phuleshwari Podiyami, the Superintendent of Dumarpal Girls’ Ashram school, the state government sanctions a sum of Rs 62,250 as a scholarship for her ashram school every month. The amount is collected through cheques bearing the signatures of BEO and school’s Superintendent. As per the complainant, BEO Joshi had demanded a bribe of Rs 21,000 each month against signatures on scholarship cheques. (PTI)
Girl found murdered in Jahangirpuri area
New Delhi:A 12-year-old girl was allegedly stabbed to death by two persons, including a minor, in Jahangirpuri area of northwest Delhi. Although victim’s family alleged that she was raped by the accused before being murdered, police ruled out any such possibility. Police said that the girl went missing on Friday and next day, she was found murdered in a nearby area. “Police have arrested Karan (23), a prime accused and apprehended his minor friend,” said a police official. Police said that they are interrogating the accused and are yet to establish the motive behind murder. (PTI)
