SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills administration has decided to install CCTV cameras in some strategic locations of the city before Christmas.
Informing this here on Thursday, East Khasi Hills district police chief M Kharkrang said necessary instruction has been issued to the agency which is executing the project.
As part of the ‘Safe Secure Shillong’ scheme, the State police have started installing CCTV cameras in 28 locations including main commercial hubs of the city.
“The company has given assurance in this regard,” he said.
Reacting to a query, he said that the installation of CCTV cameras is expected to act as a deterrent to anti-social elements besides helping in crowd and traffic management even as he said that the company has called for tenders to install better cameras in the city.
According to Kharkrang, the State police have finished all the civil works for the project and now only the company needs to implement the project at the earliest.
A control room is also being set up at Sadar police station to constantly monitor the footage transmitted from the CCTV cameras.
Under the second phase, the State police plans to integrate all the CCTV data from restaurants, shopping malls and other places.The initiative is also expected to go a long way in improving the law and order scenario in the city.
