Agartala:Tripura government has placed its department of animal resource and veterinary services on high alert on Saturday following death of the lone rhino exhibit of anthrax in Sepahijala Zoo on Wednesday night.
PCCF and Chief Wildlife Warden Dr A K Gupta said there is no need to panic as it’s a sporadic incident not like an epidemic. It can never be as harmful and lethal as bird flu but anthrax alert has been issued as a precaution.
‘As a precautionary measure against the possible outbreak of anthrax in Sepahijala zoo, the zoo authority has started vaccination of animals. They are told to keep a close watch on other animals in the zoo most vulnerable to anthrax’ Dr Gupta said.
A high level meeting was held in the Sepahijala zoo, attended by senior officials from forest department, animal resource department, state veterinary college and district administration yesterday.
A monitoring committee and another vaccination committee have been constituted to review the situation and any further outbreak of anthrax in the state.(UNI)
