Guwahati: Alleging that BJP ministers and leaders were making controversial statements to divert attention from real issues, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of giving “tactical support” to these statements.

‘Narendra Modi may be trying to give an impression that he doesn’t care. But the fact is that he is giving tactical support to his ministers and party leaders in making such contro-versial, sweeping state-ments,’ he said while addressing a press confe-rence here. Why is he allowing his ministers to continue making contro-versial statements?’ the Chief Minister questioned.

He pointed to several such statements made by the BJP leaders, including ones on terming Nathuram Godse a martyr, Taj Mahal as a Hindu symbol, con-struction of Ram Mandir, among others.

‘These BJP ministers and leaders are trying to divert the attention of the people from the real issues, on which the BJP-led NDA government has done a complete U-turn,’ Mr Gogoi maintained. He alleged the BJP was trying to propagate politics of hatred based on religious lines, adding that the people of the country are already seeing through it and will not fall into the trap.

Mr Gogoi referred to instances of the NDA government curbing or cutting off even existing benefits to the state, while not announcing new schemes to benefit it.

‘Labour money for MGNREGA has been cut off, Food SecurityAct implementation has been put on hold, flood relief money is yet to come, tea garden workers’ ration is being stopped. There are many such cases that have adversely affected the state,’ he claimed.

Mr Gogoi further pointed that the BJP, which was opposed to mega dams in Assam and land swap deal with Bangladesh when in Opposition, was now pushing forward with construction of big dams in the state as well as the land pact.(UNI)
