SHILLONG: The State Police have denied the presence of GNLA cadres in the coal belt areas of West Khasi Hills and South West Khasi Hills as was claimed by KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum. “So far we have no information about GNLA cadres indulging in rampant extortion activities along the coal belt areas located in these two districts,” a senior police official informed on Sunday.

He also said that police had not received any complaint about any such activity by the militant group.

“With the NGT ban, no coal transaction is taking place at present. Therefore, the militants are maintaining a low profile,” he said.

The senior police official added that anti-insurgent operations were on to nab the GNLA cadres hiding in the jungle. “We are committed to neutralizing the militants,” he added.

Earlier, KHADC CEM Adelbert Nongrum had claimed that GNLA cadres were active in the coal belt areas of the two districts and were indulging in rampant extortion activities.
