SHILLONG: A participatory training-cum-field demonstration programme on zero tillage cultivation of pea and capsicum in rice fallow fields was conducted at ICAR, Umiam on Thursday.
The programme, organized under AICRP (All India Coordinated Research Project) on Water Management project, was attended by 75 farmers from Umeit, Mawlasnai and Mawpun villages of Ri- Bhoi district.
The objective of the programme was to enhance water productivity through utilization of residual soil moisture immediately after harvesting of kharif rice and there by increasing the cropping intensity which in result would raise the level of livelihood of the rural farmers.
A group of ICAR scientists of the Institute also addressed different issues raised by the farmers and provided hands on training on zero tilled cultivation of pea and capsicum. On the occasion seeds, vermi-compost, fertilizer, herbicides and small field implements were distributed among the farmers.
