SHILLONG: The Union Government would ensure no discrimination in releasing funds to the State for rebuilding the damaged areas caused by the massive floods and landslides that struck Garo Hills region in September, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said on Friday.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Rijiju said that the Centre would release the funds at the earliest. He, however, did not specify the quantum of fund to be released by the Centre.

The State Government has sought 2000 crore rupees to tide over the situation.

“I will ensure that a good amount is given to Meghalaya,” Rijiju said, while adding that long- term measures may take some time but the Centre was initiating release of short- term relief to Meghalaya. He further said that long- term assistances are provided to states through plans whereas short- term assistance is released through the Home Ministry.
