Imphal: Workers at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal have become the latest victims of militant outfits, who have so far spared no section of the society and very often carry out blasts, kill and kidnap innocent people and extort money from the poorest people in the region.

Those working at the RIMS staged a sit in protest outside the institute on August 30 to protest against the planting of a grenade in the hospital by militants. Many doctors, staff members and students participated in this stir and echoed similar notes of getting full protection in the near future.

“There have been many unusual demands from different groups, which can be termed as extortion. Also they are asking to appoint people in RIMS. We do not appoint people on such preferences basis. So we are protesting against these activities,” said RIMS Director Sekharjit Singh.

A Chinese hand grenade was found inside the premises of the institute on Aug 27.

Later an unidentified caller informed the Ophthalmology Department Head that they had placed a hand grenade in the OPD.

Police suspect it to be the handiwork of one of the KCP factions.

Doctors here now feel very insecure after the incident. Moreover, such incidents create a lot of problems for the patients, who come here from far-flung areas of the state for medical check-up. “This type of untoward incident makes the staff very insecure. And if the grenade had exploded it would have injured many patients and staff members of the hospital,” said Modhumangol Singh, a doctor at RIMS.

“I have come from Ukhrul to Imphal to get a medical check up, but the OPD is closed due to this incident. This is very discouraging,” added Felim Keishing, a patient. (ANI)
