Guwahati: A Kaziranga Green Marathon, coinciding with World Environment Day on June 5, has been planned at the world famous national park by environmentalists and district administration.

Aaranyak, a society for biodiversity conservation in northeast India, which is collaborating with Bokakhat District Master Athletic Association, Assam Forest Department and Bokakhat Civil Administration to organise the run, said here on Wednesday the half Marathon from Bokakhat to Kohora will be held in the early morning of June 5.

‘The marathon, unique for this region, is named as Kaziranga Green Marathon, where participants and volunteers will run for a cause to promote nature conservation and inculcate love for wildlife and nature amongst the students and youth as well as in the masses,’ Aaranyak said in a release.

This would be the first green marathon in the region and the organisers plan to take this as annual event and promote the same to a national and international marathon in near future.

Cash prizes will be given to three winners and seven consolation prizes will also be awarded.

There would be no joining fee and participants from NE will only be eligible this year, the organisers informed.

Side events like rallies, mass jogging for common people, street drama, songs on environment theme, tree plantation and other related activities will be organised to convey conservation message to the common people. (UNI)
