CM, Prestone in national capital

NEWDELHI : Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma arrived here on Tuesday for a meeting of the empowered committee of the state finance ministers, but he is likely to meet top AICC leaders to explain his points of view vis a vis the demand of the dissidents for his removal.

Some dissidents, led by MPCC chief DD Lapang, met the party president Sonia Gandhi and vice-president Rahul Gandhi to put forward their demand for Sangma’s removal.

The Chief Minister, who was in capital then, could not meet either of them since he had to leave for Shillong the day after the dissidents met Rahul.

This time however, Sangma will try to meet the two top leaders to explain the “futility” of the demand. He is likely to submit the report card of his government.

Interestingly, a few dissidents including Prestone Tynsong have already arrived here and others are likely to follow the suit.

The somewhat uncertain stand taken by the AICC General Secretary in-charge Meghalaya, Luizinho Faleiro has also given a new twist to the leadership drama.

Falerio was to visit the state earlier this month, but postponed it at the last moment.

Now, the grapevines in Congress state that the once strong General Secretary in charge of all the seven North Eastern states barring Assam might be sent to his home state as PCC President.

Goa, once ruled by Congress under Faleiro as Chief Minister, is now run by BJP government.

Two cabinet ministers- Prestone Tynsong and HDR Lyngdoh besides former Speaker M M Danggo have revolted against the Chief Minister in the wake of party’s defeat in Tura Lok Sabha polls.

The Shillong MP Vincent H Pala is also putting his weight behind the dissidents this time.

The Chief Minister could have extended his stay in the capital to meet other AICC leaders, but he has to attend the North East Chief Ministers’ two-day meeting to be held in Guwahati from Thursday.

Thereafter, he has to leave for Bangladesh as part of a high-powered official delegation.
